"Until we, as adults, learn to stop being angry, insulting each other and picking fights every chance we get, how in heck can we expect our kids to behave any differently? I guarantee, if you are an Internet troll, generally angry and surly and by all appearances hate the human race, the children around you will act no better than what you are modeling. We have to be the examples for those who are still growing.
If you want another opinion, here you go. Until adults start leading and acting like adults, we are just spinning our wheels. There is no perfect political party, no perfect way to peel a banana, and no perfect person. Adults insulting each other and cramming political views in our ears in a constant barrage of “the world is ending,” is only making the kids in our society more stressed and angry."

Two years after Radiolab’s fantastic Whale Fall, Robert Krulwich (who, amazingly, does his own charming illustrations!) explores the power of whale poop:

Whales do, in fact, garden the ocean, fertilizing the seas to grow their own food.
Whales recirculate the iron. Even the bits that slip down to the dark bottom get pulled back up by whales. Sperm whales dive to terrifying depths, 3,000 feet below, to hunt iron-rich prey like giant squid. Pressed by the weight of the ocean, their digestion stops; they don’t excrete. They consume the iron below, hold it in, climb back to the surface, and that’s where they poop. Every sperm whale, it is said, draws 50 tons of iron to the surface every year…
What whales consume (which is a lot), they give back.

Read the excellent full article here and complement it with the enchanting Whale Fall.

BionicKangaroo
Robotic recreation of the Kangaroo form put together by Festo to demonstrate energy-efficient movement (this was initially announced on April the 1st, but turns out to be real) - video embedded below:

With the BionicKangaroo, Festo has technologically reproduced the unique way a kangaroo moves. Like its natural model, it can recover the energy when jumping, store it and efficiently use it for the next jump.
On the artificial kangaroo, Festo intelligently combines pneumatic and electrical drive technology to produce a highly dynamic system. The stable jump kinematics plus the precise control technology ensure stability when jumping and landing. The consistent lightweight construction facilitates the unique jumping behaviour. The system is controlled by gestures.

mashablehq:

We sat down with Anthony Nyström, Mashable's Principal for Artificial Intelligence to learn more about his job and the field.
For starters, what is a good definition of artificial intelligence?
The simplest definition of artificial intelligence is anything that can or does require human intelligence being performed by a computational or mechanical device.
What does it actually mean to say that a machine has learned something?
Well, it means a couple things. There are two types primary of learning: “Supervised” and “Unsupervised” Learning. In Supervised Learning the computer is trained to algorithmically recognize some form of knowledge. In the case of Unsupervised Learning our output is unknown and instead the computational device algorithmically recognizes patterns. There are a few other algorithmic types of machine learning, however, these two types are the most relevant to the work we do at Mashable.
How did you become interested in artificial intelligence?
I have always been fascinated with the potential for solving complex problems, especially within Informatics. In order to solve complex problems we require intelligence. How can we not be interested with what we can create and in creating intelligence?
I think we are all aware that as our ability to see the very small becomes keener, in turn, our world gets that much larger. Basically, the more we can see, the more there is to see! And that is just our physical world. Now, think about that in regards to the virtual world; data, documents, images, videos, etc. We have so much more to study, compute and solve, and the power to do so.
Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning allows us to use our innate and individual human capabilities for defining problems and recognizing solutions. It separates us in to distinct capability fields. We create the frameworks and algorithms, the computers make the magic happen.
